Six Months of Gym Without a Single Rep: My Procrastination Story

I did it. I joined the gym. Paid the fee. Even told a few friends. In my head, this was the start of my fitness journey.

Reality check?

For the first six months, I did not move an inch.

Literally. I didn’t step inside once. The only thing that got slimmer was my bank balance.

My Favorite Excuses (You’ll Probably Relate)

  • “From next Monday, pakka.”

  • “Let me just finish this month, new month = new me.”

  • “Birthday is coming, I’ll start after that. Who starts before cake?”

  • “I don’t even have proper gym shoes yet, bro. Need to order first.”

Each excuse felt so reasonable at the time. Looking back, they were just different flavors of procrastination.

The Guilt Gym Membership

Every month when the auto-debit hit, I told myself, “No problem, at least I’m financially supporting the gym industry.”

Passing by the gym building felt like passing an ex — you avoid eye contact but secretly feel judged.

I wasn’t a gym member. I was just a gym sponsor.

What I Learned the Hard Way

  1. Paying doesn’t burn calories.

If it did, I’d be shredded by now.

  2. There’s no perfect time.

Mondays, birthdays, New Years — none of these gave me magical discipline. The only thing that works is starting today.

  3. Half the battle is showing up.

The first time I finally went in, I realized the hardest rep wasn’t bench press — it was just opening the gym door.

If You’re Like Me…

  • Stop waiting for the “ideal” day. It doesn’t exist.

  • Go once. Even for 10 minutes. Break the mental barrier.

  • Laugh at your excuses — but don’t keep living by them.

Final Thought

Six months, thousands of rupees, and not a single dumbbell touched. That was my grand fitness journey beginning. But you know what? It taught me something important — motivation isn’t what gets you fit, action is.

So if you’re sitting there thinking, “Next Monday I’ll start,” consider this your reminder: Mondays are a scam.

Just go today.
