Typically every human being who works for a company or had worked or knows someone who works for them are aware of the term 'human resource'. But they are aware of this term in the form of a department that exists in a company who looks after the remuneration, hiring and complaints of the workforce working in a particular company. This certainly makes sense and is enough information for most of the people who are associated with any company or not. Human Resource is indeed an department just like the marketing department or the accounts department, but what human resource depict is much larger than just a department.
Business need resources to operate the functions of it - example - money, land, machinery, raw materials and the most important people to manage all other resources. Needless to say that as humans look after the entire operations of the business, they are the most crucial resource for any company.
The quality of people working for any company is an important factor to consider to become a successful organisation. You see companies attracting talents (people with skills) by various means, now a days. Knowledge workers or Knowledge employees tend to be the most important assets of any organisation. Organisations who have Knowledge Employees will always have an edge over those you lack in this dimension. This creates a need to attract employees with skills and also make them stay with the company for a longer period of time.
This is where the Human Resource 'department' comes into play - To attract, hire and retain. How do the 'HR Department' do it will be covered in the upcoming blog posts.
